Our favorite things to cook in the backcountry

Doesn't it feel like everything tastes better when you're camping? Or is it our nostalgic taste buds that know we will get something unique to our outdoor adventures when we go camping? 

We love the great outdoors and the food that comes with it! Here are some of our favorite recipes that we seriously suggest you try. Remember to take a mini camping stove, materials to safely start a fire, and a spork so you can properly enjoy your backcountry meals. 

Breakfast:
Lumberjack tinfoil breakfast
Materials: Tinfoil, Near Zero spork, and non-stick spray

Ingredients: 

  • A dozen eggs (or as many as you need for your group) 
  • Sausage 
  • Frozen hash browns
  • Chopped peppers and onions (any other vegetables you want to add)
  • Cheese
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Instructions:

  1. Spray your tinfoil with non-stick spray
  2. Put your sausage on your tinfoil, crack eggs, and chopped veggies on top, and season with salt and pepper 
  3. Wrap your concoction in tin foil and carefully place it near your fire for about 20 minutes or until your eggs look done and your veggies look soft.
  4. Throw on some delicious cheese, then wait for it to cool 
  5. ENJOY!

Lunch: 
Quesadilla on a shovel
Materials: Near Zero Titanium Shovel 

Ingredients:

  • Tortillas
  • Cheese
  • Pepperonis 
  • Butter
  • Tabasco sauce (if you like a little spice)
  • Pre-cooked meat (ground beef, shredded chicken)
  • Vegetables (peppers, onions, broccoli, spinach)
  • Shredded cheese

Instructions:

  1. Clean your shovel thoroughly. Try using materials from our hygiene kit
  2. Place the butter on your shovel and melt it over the fire (don’t burn it)
  3. Place your tortilla on the shovel and all the toppings you want
  4. Hover it over your fire until the cheese melts and your veggies are cooked
  5. Enjoy!

Dinner:
Mac n’ Cheese in a mug
Materials: Near Zero’s camping mug

Ingredients: 

  • ½ cup of pasta 
  • 4 tbsp of milk
  • ¼ tsp of cornstarch
  • 4 tbsp of shredded cheese

Instructions:

  1. Put your pasta and 3/4c of water in your mug
  2. Boil noodles in your mug, either by putting it near your fire or over a grill
  3. Once pasta is cooked, pour water out
  4. Add milk, cornstarch, and shredded cheese
  5. Enjoy!

Dessert: 
“Moose Balls,” AKA Chocolate Doughnut Moose Pops
Materials: This recipe calls for a Dutch oven or our Near Zero pot that can hold 3 cups of oil for frying purposes. 

Ingredients: 

  • 3 cups of oil
  • Bag of Hershey Kisses
  • ½ cup powdered Sugar
  • 2 packages of refrigerated biscuit dough

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil to medium heat for frying
  2. Separate the biscuit dough and wrap one Hershey Kiss in a piece so it's totally covered
  3. Place the ball in hot oil until it's golden brown
  4. Remove and roll in powdered sugar
  5. ENJOY!
