Rain, Wind, Hail... and Everything Stayed Dry

I recently purchased the Near Zero 1P DynaLite Tent for lightweight motorcycle camping and just completed my first overnight trip with it. The tent performed exceptionally well.

When we arrived at camp, I got the tent set up and shortly afterward a storm rolled in. We experienced cold temperatures, steady rain, strong winds and hail throughout the night. The DynaLite kept me completely dry and comfortable the entire time. I never experienced any leaks, water intrusion, or issues with the tent handling the weather.

One feature I particularly appreciated was the vestibule. Despite being a lightweight one-person tent, the vestibule provided enough room to store my riding boots, helmet, and hydration pack while keeping them protected from the weather. That extra covered space made camp life much more comfortable during the storm.

The tent packs small, weighs approximately 3 pounds on my scale, and fits well with a lightweight motorcycle camping setup. Setup was straightforward and quick, which proved valuable when the weather moved in.

After spending a cold, rainy, and windy night in the mountains, I can say the DynaLite exceeded my expectations. For riders, backpackers, or anyone looking for a lightweight shelter that can handle real weather, I would confidently recommend it.

Rating: 5/5
Tested in: Cold, rainy, windy overnight motorcycle camping conditions
Result: Dry camper, dry gear, good night's sleep.

Delightful

Love this comfortable and convenient light little tent - I love how the wind can gently blow through and I can see all around when tent fly is not on, and secure when it is. My only criticism is the useless but cute stakes.

Very light and compact

Very light and compact, easy to set up. My only complaint is the footprint is much larger and there’s no way to line it up with the tent.

Great lightweight tent... with a little help.

I just wanted to follow up with some feedback following my recent 140 mile section hike on the Ice Age Trail using your Dynalite 1P tent. I had rain on several nights, and the tent performed great. The additional guy out points I added on the rainfly definitely helped with venting and condensation. This thing sets up and tears down easily... and on the mornings when it was pouring rain, there was enough room inside and under the vestibule to get all my gear packed up and tucked away before climbing out into the elements.

I cut a piece of plastic drop cloth to the size of the mesh body footprint to use as a ground sheet, and had no signs of abrasion or wear on the bottom of the tent. The only failure I encountered was a single broken tent stake, but that was my fault. I was setting up on pretty hard ground on my last night and used a rock to pound in the stakes.

For the weight and size, this thing was exactly what I needed for my 10 day hike. I'm glad that on the updated version you're addressing the additional guy out points on the rainfly, as they gave me peace of mind on the nights that it poured.

Oh, I also used your inflatable pillow in addition to my nemo fillo elite. I tend to sleep on my side or stomach, so having that easily adjustable firmness was great depending on how I had the pillows arranged.

Excellent tent

Love this tent. Went on a weekend camping trip that turned into a muddy mess with tons of heavy rain. This tent took the weather like a champ. My gear stayed completely dry inside. The vestibule was a good place for my muddy shoes. The bug netting worked perfectly and kept out all kinds of bugs trying to get away from the rain. My only gripe would be the material used for the guylines absorbs a lot of water and stays wet for a while. I would advise replacing them with dyneema if available.

The Right Weight for the Right Price

This tent saved me 4 Lbs over my Haven Specter set up. It is very fast to set up first time was 2 minutes with color coding of poles and grommets. The poles will make it simple in the dark or under bad weather to get inside fast.

Easy tent to assemble

I have not used the tent camping. That will be after Christmas. I have set it up in my living room and it was very easy. There is color coding the ends. This includes the rain fly. I missed one hanger and that was really my fault of not paying attention. Set this tent up 2 to 4 times before a trip and you will be ready to setup in the dark.

Great Tent & Top-notch Customer Service

Excellent option for a lightweight, free-standing 1 person tent. Cut weight and saved space in my pack, which is a win-win in any hiking scenario.
Had the pleasure of being assisted by Scott Jensen with my purchase. Had a tight delivery window before my backpacking trip and he made sure I had my tent in time. Great company and product. Thank you!

Can't wait for Philmont!

I ordered this after realizing the weight of my current 2P tent. After my shake-downs, I know this is perfect for one person. I have room for my sleep system, tomorrow's clothes, and a few other necessities.

I worked with customer service in order to order a new rain fly which I lost on an adventure. The tent worked wonderfully while in use and customer service worked with me to acquire a new rain fly. I would definitely buy from this company again. Good service and good products.

Pretty good solo tent

Just got done with a multi day hike in the sawtooth mountains of Idaho. For the most part the tent did its job, however I am disappointed in the rain fly. The fly seemed to be small for the tent itself. It did not cover the tent entirely leaving open gaps no matter how tight it was cinched down. Even with the unfortunate gaps there was ventilation issues and every morning woke up with it wet and dripping through the mesh each time it was brushed up against. The vestibule is small I wasn’t able to keep gear under it without out it caving in the side of the tent. My buddy bought the same tent, was on the same hike, and the same issue with the rain fly.

We have some great news! Thanks to yours and other customer feedback, we have upgraded the rainfly to now include more loops on the fly for guying it out, to increase ventilation, as well as production from rain. All tents now come with these upgraded features. In addition, we have shortened the poles to be just 15 inches, so it now compacts down even smaller, but still the same tent pitched size! Thank you again for your feedback that has helped us make these improvements. Please reach out if you would like to upgrade to the new version.

Update on my review

I finally got out on the AT for a hike on the 100-Mile Wilderness with the 1-person tent. It was rainy with the hurricane glancing the Trail. I used sticks to try to get the rain fly away from the tent to no avail. Ended up with water inside. Also, the mesh cargo pocket inside is at the foot of the tent--not convenient. With the two-person tent there are pockets on both sides at the head of the tent in addition to the overhead "attic". The storage options were great for those of us who need a bit of help staying organized. I like the 1-person tent option, but it does need some improvements. Were corners cut to keep it below three pounds?

Pretty good tent

The materials of this tent are lightweight and durable. I appreciate most especially the cinch-down tent bag that this tent comes with.

I just took my tent for a test run on a five day backpacking trip in the Wind River Range and the tent held up well. I was disappointed at the design and functionality of the rainfly and the ground tarp specifically, however. The ground tarp is too large- it protrudes past the tent and as a result it allows for rain to collect under the tent if it is attached to the tent poles. As for the rain fly, the one door works well but it doesn’t allow for proper ventilation on the opposite side of the door or at the ends of the tent. I will now have to sew on three additional loops on those sides of the tent to allow for proper ventilation either during rain events or even just when it’s dewey in the morning. Every night of my trip I woke up in the morning with the ends of my sleeping bag wet because it would touch the end of the mesh tent and then the rain fly because the rain fly wasn’t able to be tethered away from the mesh tent on those ends.

I like this product, especially at this price point, but it needs a few modifications to make it a fully functional design.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our 1-Person Backpacking Tent. We're glad to hear that the materials are lightweight and durable, and that the cinch-down tent bag was a useful feature for your trip in the Wind River Range.

Great little tent.

I bought this tent for my son. He is interested in backpacking.
In no way is this a negative review. I have spent the last 15 years modifying and creating gear to meet my specific needs. As with most of my gear, I buy gear that is solid. I chose this tent based on size, weight, functionality. and choice of materials. We took it out on a test weekend at a campground. It performed well.
My only issues/mods would be :
1. Fly. I will add tryouts to three sides, so that in a rainstorm the fly is flared out more to get the drips away from the ground cloth and sreen. This will also improve airflow.
2. Ground cloth: I may roll the seems in a bit so that the ground cloth doesn't protrude out from the tent and funnel water under.

These are minor/easy fixes.
This tent is sold, roomy, easy to pitch. Next stop , a weekend of backpacking.

Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our 1-Person Backpacking Tent. We're glad to hear that it performed well during your test weekend at the campground. Your suggestions for modifications are great and we appreciate your creativity in making the tent even better for your specific needs. We hope your son enjoys using it on his backpacking trips. Happy adventuring!

Solo tent - just what I needed

I was glad to see Near Zero offer a one-person tent. My two-person tent performed very well on the PCT. I knew I needed a smaller tent for solo outings and bought this as soon as it was available. Customer service is a huge plus, as well!
