THE DEAN™ TR 50 Travel Ready Overnight Hiking Backpack is our 4th generation and most advanced DEAN pack yet, redesigned for improved comfort, organization, and packing flexibility on overnight to multi day adventures. Sized at 22 × 14 × 8 inches, it is carry on friendly for most airlines while still offering exceptional packing capacity.

While labeled as a 50L pack, it is very comparable in size and overall capacity to our previous 60L DEAN pack, now redesigned to provide greater versatility and more efficient packing.

The TR50 features a true 50L main internal compartment, which is why it is labeled as a 50L pack. However, its total usable capacity is comparable to most 55 to 60 liter backpacks. With multiple exterior lightweight pockets, pouches, and secure compression strap attachment points, you can expand beyond the internal space while keeping gear tightly fastened, stable, and well balanced. If you're used to a traditional 60L pack, the TR 50 will feel very similar in capacity, while offering greater flexibility in how you pack and carry your gear.

Weighing just 3 lb 8 oz (or 4 lbs with included removable dividers and pack raincover), the pack is built from durable, water resistant PFAS free 210D ripstop nylon and upgraded with an ultralight reinforced aluminum frame for strong load support with reduced weight. The adjustable torso system (14–22 inches), upgraded padding, S-shaped shoulder straps, and breathable mesh back panel provide all day comfort.

The redesigned interior includes an expanded upper compartment, front loading access, and removable dividers for easy organization. Additional features include large zippered waist belt pockets, expandable top and bottom compression straps, oversized water bottle pockets, hydration bladder compatibility, trekking pole loops, a sternum strap with safety whistle, and YKK water resistant zippers.

Shoulder straps feature daisy chain webbing loops for attaching accessory pouches (sold separately).

Will the DEAN TR 50 pack be large enough? I currently use a larger 55–60L backpack. How does your pack compare in size?

The DEAN TR 50 is very comparable in overall capacity to many 55–60L backpacks, and in some cases can carry even more usable gear thanks to its efficient packing design, exterior pockets, gear straps, and expandable depth.

Unlike traditional top loading tube style packs, the DEAN TR 50 offers greater flexibility for organizing and accessing gear. The full front opening panel makes it easy to pack and retrieve items inside the main compartment, while expandable compression straps, extra large side pockets, top brain storage, and a separate hydration bladder compartment provide additional options for carrying or organizing items outside the pack when needed.

As a result, many hikers find the usable carrying capacity can equal or even exceed packs with higher volume ratings, while keeping gear easier to access and organize.

Can the DEAN TR 50 backpack or bundles be brought on an airplane as carry on luggage?

Yes. The DEAN TR 50 backpack measures approximately 22 × 14 × 8 inches, which is designed to meet most airline carry on size requirements. In fact, TR stands for Travel Ready — the pack was intentionally designed with airline carry on limits in mind.

For reference, common airline carry on limits include:

  • Southwest Airlines: 24 × 16 × 10 inches
  • Frontier Airlines: 24 × 16 × 10 inches
  • Allegiant Air: 22 × 16 × 10 inches
  • American Airlines: 22 × 14 × 9 inches

Since the DEAN TR 50 is 22 × 14 × 8 inches, it generally fits within these carry on guidelines.

The soft shell design with internal frame allows the backpack to flex slightly compared to hard sided luggage, making it easier to place in overhead bins if needed. As always, we recommend confirming carry on size limits with your airline before traveling.

Is the DEAN TR 50 backpack waterproof?

The DEAN TR 50 is designed to handle wet environments, but it's not fully waterproof.

The pack is built with PFAS-free, water-resistant ripstop nylon and features YKK water-resistant silicone-coated zippers throughout, providing excellent protection against light rain and damp conditions.

That said, it does not include fully taped or sealed seams, which are required for a pack to be completely waterproof. For heavier rain or extended exposure to water, we recommend using the included pack raincover.
