Surviving and Thriving: The Benefits of Solo Camping

If you've ever watched the series “Alone” on Hulu and Netflix, you may have an opinion on the subject. If you haven't seen the show, ten contestants are placed in remote areas, given minimal supplies, and challenged to survive as long as possible. The contestants are all experienced in the wilderness and surviving off the land and will call the showrunners to come pick them up when they’ve decided to tap out.

Some contestants drop out due to lack of food and shelter, and some have a hard time being alone for days and months away from friends and family. However, even though it can be hard to be "alone," it can also be rejuvenating and help you find self-confidence in a world that can push you down.

NOTE: We DO NOT advise camping alone unless you are experienced for your safety.

Benefits:

  • Teaching yourself new skills
    • When supplies are limited, your mind and body will go into survival mode, and you are forced to learn new skills or put your skills into practice that you didn't think you'd be able to do. Learning new skills builds confidence, helps you discover you can do hard things, and are resilient. Many who get into camping learn they're more capable than they thought, giving them a new sense of confidence.
  • Solitude
    • Introverts rejoice when they are isolated, and even extroverts find time alone rejuvenating. Being alone allows one to get centered, meditate, reflect, and not worry about anyone else, and not feel dependent on anything else.
  • Finding yourself in nature
    • Being alone in nature helps you connect with something larger than yourself. You hear and see things differently and realize how insignificant you are. On the other hand, you learn how your place in this world helps the world go round. It also gives you a sense of how the noise of everyday life affects your way of thinking and seeing your importance.

The bottom line is that camping alone allows you to leave everyday worries behind. You're only focusing on yourself, what's happening around you in nature, and the basics of survival that don't require money, just your skills.
